Biogeochemistry of Trace Metals Program


	is a research unit in Soil & Water Science Department at the University of Florida. The program, under the leadership of Dr. Lena Q. Ma, promotes teaching, research and outreach activities related to the biogeochemical processes of trace metals in soils, water, wastes, and plants. The program focuses primarily on soil contamination and remediation, especially phytoremediation, and land application of wastes.

Our research group has recently discovered the 1st known arsenic hyperaccumulator, commonly known as Chinese Brake fern (p. vittata). The discovery was published in Nature in 2001, resulting in unprecedented publicity for our research program and generating much interest in phytoremediation of arsenic contaminated sites.

        Dr. Ma won the Discovery 2001 Award;

        The discovery was reported by New York Times;

        Dr. Ma was interviewed by BBC-Radio4-Woman's Hour in 2001.
